Abstract

With regard to the knowledge of the human person, said Nicholas Malebranche in the seventeenth century:

"The most beautiful, most pleasant and most necessary of all our knowledge is undoubtedly the knowledge of ourselves. Of all human sciences, the science of man is the most dignified of man. However, this science is neither the most cultivated nor the finished one we have; most men neglect her entirely. Even among those who boast science, there are very few who apply to it, let alone grow it successfully."

There are several reasons why human beings often do not try to know who is the same. One, as Pascal expressed, because man infinitely surpasses man: we are, in many ways, more than we know and what we can know about ourselves. Another, the one Malebranche gave: men feel displeasure and disgust as they enter into themselves to recognize their weaknesses and weaknesses, and are pleased in curious research and in all sciences that have some brilliance. Always being out of themselves, they do not realize the disorders that occur in them. They think they're okay because they don't feel. Also because - as Karl Jaspers expresses it - the essence of man is the most mysterious thing, we do not understand the existence of our freedom, his awareness of being is composed of something that he never understands. Erich Fromm highlights some difficulties that his own nature poses to human beings: his instinctive determination has reached a minimum and brain development to the fullest, there is no inherited program that tells him what to decide in many cases that his life may depend on a wise decision; endowed with self-awareness and reason, man knows that he is a being apart from nature and others: he understands his helplessness and ignorance, and he is aware that his end will be death; has gained knowledge of good and evil, and that is a very heavy burden.
