Abstract

The intention of this work is to focus on the general principles relating to the relationship between education and freedom. The discussion will be nurtured in part by classical statements in the literature of political economy, while illustrations taken from reality will be based mainly on knowledge gained from experiences in Europe and North America. I understand that Latin America's own education details will be dealt with by Carolina de Bolívar.
My discussion will be devoted exclusively to the education of minors, whose school levels include up to secondary education. Part 2 discusses the distinction between adult freedom and children's freedom, and the choice between family paternalism and state paternalism. Part 3 examines the erroneous nature of typical stories of education in to concerning the conduct of families in past times. Part 4 is an overview of the potential of education to instill common values and respect for individual rights in a free society. Part 5 investigates the use of education as an indoctrination vehicle, intended to restrict freedom through the recourse to weaken resistance to political exploitation. Part 6 examines the role played by sectarian instruction in religious indoctrination, and its implications in relation to freedom. Part 7 presents the main conclusions.
