Abstract
More than ever before in history, Jerusalem and the land of Israel are now attracting the attention of the whole world. In the Bible, Jerusalem is regarded as the center of the divine history of salvation; in modern times it seems that it has become, more and more, the center of political history. The city of peace has become, in recent years and especially in recent weeks, a sign of contradiction among nations.
In Costa Rica we have not been able to be indifferent to two serious events, affecting Jerusalem. On 20 August last, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution urging countries, which had the seat of their diplomatic representation in Jerusalem, to withdraw it from Jerusalem; as a result, not legally necessary, our Government agreed, six days later, in a gifted response to that instance, to withdraw from Jerusalem the headquarters of our Embassy to the State of Israel and to move it to Tel-aviv.
These facts do not occur by spontaneous generation. They are the result of complicated geopolitical processes, which have their stage in the Near East, but which have an impact on the world of international relations and diplomatic alignments of countries around the world.
