Notes on Artist's Social Responsibility

Abstract

From the perspective of an educator working in the musical field, both in second education and in the university field, as well as a performer, a certain question arising from the same society is felt with some vividness: What is it appropriate to do in the field of education in artistic matters? What priorities, what preferences is required to be taken by those who act in the field of art?
It is soon noted that there is a danger of giving primacy to the pecuniary interest over the higher values. Also vanity, eagerness to excel, simply attracting attention in any way, can be the reasons that drown out higher values.
By taking in these notes a national perspective, that is, by analyzing what is happening in Costa Rica, one can realize that democracy that develops to the present must be careful with its values, because if they are not cultivated and defended by consensus, beyond minor interests and parties, it will not be able to survive or degenerate into something else.
Juan Luis Mendoza - considering an expression that emerged as part of public opinion - has written in Ethical Demands: "Ideological sectarianism leads, too often, to simply use an extreme resource to resolve the conflicts that inevitably arise: violence". What is desirable is that the artist, without having to identify with any party or sectarian position, contributes what only he can give, moved by his vocation, to express what will be his creation, while exalting, he values with determination the constituent social values of our national being.
