Abstract

The human body, according to the Holy Scriptures, "is a temple of the Holy Spirit". Man is a being endowed with a material, natural and organic part, the body, and another immaterial, supernatural, spirit. According to the first and under the imperious impulses of his biological needs, man would act as any superior animal, but his spirit, channeling and regulating such impulses, gives his actions a characteristic personal and moral seal. Hence man, in his actions, proceeds in a very different way from that of all other organic beings around him. Equipped with reflective intelligence, unique and effective means available to adapt to the most varied environmental factors, and freedom of decision, it presents various modes of behavior, aimed at satisfying not only its bodily needs including food taboo, but also those dictated by its spirit.
