Abstract

As has happened in the world's large cities, in the Central Valley of San José, Costa Rica, as well as in rural city centers, especially provincial headwaters, flat land was the first to be used from the colony for the construction of both institutional and commercial and housing buildings.

In Costa Rica, which follows in this the Hispanic pattern in the planning of cities, it all began with the construction of a church, a square (in many places used for sports) and a communal center. Around this center began to develop the commercial and housing areas. People required, due to a shortage of communications and because they liked it, to live near elementary services.
