Abstract

Antonio Machado (1875–1939) is perhaps the most legitimate Spanish poet. The most authentic of them all. The most universal, since he always spoke from the exact level of man, as the great Lion Philip would say. And to speak like this – from the exact level of man – is to speak in all languages. For all the men, yesterday's, tomorrow's, the usual.

Antonio Machado's human poetry – too human – for that very fact is eternal: it does not recognize spatial or temporal boundaries. It's a long-time poetry, fresh, true and authentic. The years will pass. Schools will pass. But his poetic work will always rise as a pure flowering of the spirit.

Machado lived and suffered for his poetry. In it poetry was passion. Sacrifice. Anguish. Blood from his heart. The only reason for its existence. Man and artist concreted an indissoluble unity. Man never betrayed the poet, nor the poet to man. Let's talk, then, first, about the man.
