Abstract

With the economic openness of the North American market, there is no doubt that total quality management in Costa Rica's SMEs plays a leading role in their competitiveness.

In this scenario, the placement of products in the north country market is conditioned on compliance with existing quality requirements and regulations.

Faced with this problematic situation, it is of great interest to expose to the business community of the country the results of the diagnosis of the state of total quality management in cheese-producing SMEs in Costa Rica, with the aim of understanding the gap between quality practices and the standards required with CAFTA ad portas and promptly addressing the weaknesses and threats encountered.

As a methodological reference, during 2003 and early 2004 exploratory research was designed and conducted with a dominantly quantitative two-stage mixed approach, in which five in-depth and unstructured interviews were conducted with company directors representing 72% of SMEs in the country's dairy sector.
