Abstract

Social institutions are instruments for the achievement of purposes of collective interest and therefore are strongly influenced by the restrictions imposed by the environment and by the ideas (or ideologies) prevailing at the time they are created. There is nothing strange about that; the strange thing is that it was not like that. The purposes and instruments of some institutions, therefore, must be reviewed —or reinterpreted— from time to time, in the light of new environments and changing social desires in the matter.
