Abstract

The Internet communications network, recently inaugurated through the Bitnet II node of the UCR, allows the professors and students of our universities to search for their books and articles depending on their personal computers instead of going to the university libraries. This is excellent news for users, because they will put aside the headaches of trying to access information that is generally compartmentalized and closed by walls of regulations and obstacles. What will this mean for libraries and librarians, will they cease to exist? No and yes. They will no longer be traditional libraries as we know them, and they will have to take on the challenge presented by this new type of electronic information. In a series of articles the future of the profession and of libraries is analyzed, based on what the librarians themselves have analyzed in a recent Symposium.
