Abstract

The concept of eradicating a disease, that is, its total elimination, until a few decades ago was incredible; until in October 1977 the last case of smallpox in the world was registered, crowning an effort undertaken in January 1967 as a result of the 7:00 p.m. World Health Assembly (1966). The famous "Goal Zero" had been reached: the total disappearance of a disease in the world. The fundamental strategy was to vaccinate at least 80% of the population, establish systems for epidemiological surveillance (detection of outbreaks) and containment of outbreaks.
