Bilateral variation of the sciatic nerve A case report and literature review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Different anatomical variants of the sciatic nerve have been described and most of them have been unilateral. However, during the study of the gluteal region in an Anatomy Laboratory session at the Autonomic Central America University it was observed a bilateral variant in the sciatic nerve related to piriformis muscle in a 55- year male cadaver. It was a type C variant according to Beaton and Anson classification described in 1937, in which the sciatic nerve is found divided respect to piriformis muscle showing its fibular common branch superior to the piriformis muscle and the tibial nerve is below to this muscle. The branches of the sciatic nerve trajectory from gluteal region to popliteal fossa were described. The clinical aspects involved to the variants were discussed.
