Abstract

In recent years, Costa Rican society and national health authorities have seen with concern the increase in cases of poisoning, hospitalizations, and deaths due to ingestion of methanol found in adulterated alcoholic beverages. We proceed to review the report of the outbreaks of cases caused by intoxication with methanol from the year 2019 and that generated a national health alert at the time. In turn, a search is made of the cases reported at the regional level, as well as the pathophysiology, clinical-toxicological, pharmacotherapeutic management and forensic medical findings of this poisoning.
