Abstract

The general objective of this research is to analyze the effect of musical stimulation, depending on the type of music, on the attention and concentration of a group of adolescents from a private educational institution located in Cartago, Costa Rica. It is hypothesized that attention and concentration increase if a musical stimulus selected by the student is used during the development of cognitive activities. The research has a quantitative approach. It is transversal, descriptive and pre-experimental. We worked with a group of 30 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 16, who are in eighth and ninth grade. The research approach is quantitative.
The type of research is descriptive, transversal and experimental. The SART Test (a computerized test designed to evaluate successes and errors in sustained concentration and attention) was administered three times under different conditions: no music, instrumental music, and music with lyrics. The music was chosen by each participant at the time they began the test. The results indicate that the majority of successes occurred when the students listened to background music with lyrics. Subsequently, the survey created by Goltz and Sadakata was administered to the participants to analyze their perceptions of the benefits of music. The survey revealed that 60% of participants perceive and utilize the benefits of music in their learning activities.
