Abstract

Since July 3rd, 1903, it has been necessary to join up and participate in a professional corporation in order to practice architecture and engineering in Costa Rica. This fact was recorded in the Law that founded the “Technical Department of the Republic” which is currently known as Professional Corporation of Engineers and Architects. Nevertheless, the reasons that justify the obligation of becoming a member of this professional corporation is still debatable. The main objective of the following lines is to provide three proper elements that contribute to the possible answer for this debate: the legal approach, the people’s convenience approach, and the ethics. Even though the arguments stated in this article refer specifically to Engineering and Architecture, they can be useful for other professions if the corresponding adjustments are made.
