Abstract

As a result of the ideas exposed by the protestant theologian Rudolf Bultman, the historical-critical methodology has been spread in order to analyze and to raise questions related to a variety of biblical incidents and writings. In Costa Rica, the book written by the philosopher Luis Diego Cascante –El otro Jesús (2011)—has caused big controversy. This book was inspired in the theories stated by Spanish thinkers who summarized hypothesis such as: Jesus Christ was crucified due to he was an instigator, Christ never claimed that he was God, it is false that the Jewish turned Jesus in to the Romans to be crucified, the miracles described were made up afterwards, and so on. After making a summary about its theories, the same methodology and Biblical hermeneutics were used to complement the book’s theories so that some statements are denied. Two kinds of processes and judgments to which Jesus Christ was submitted are highlighted. First, the thesis that Jesus was condemned to death by the Jewish authorities due to instigation and extortion is defended. Second, it is Biblically demonstrated that not only Christ but also other people–be it his friends or his enemies—declared that he was God and God’s Son.

The Catholic theologian René Latourelle makes reference to the fact that Jesus did not have siblings. Moreover, each of Christ’s miracles has been subject to analysis through the same historicalcritical methodology.
