Abstract

The liver abscess is a rarely prevalent but highly lethal pathology and keeps being a medical challenge. It can be divided into three main categories based on the adjacent conditions:infectious, malign and iatrogenic. In the case of the infectious abscesses the atiological agents have evolved over the years and are varied, including bacteria, parasites and fungi. These include those secondary to the direct extension of local infection, systemicbacteremia and intraabdominal infections that access to the portal system to get to the liver. Generally, patients are diagnosedwith factors of previous comorbidity acting as predisposing for the development of the abscess.

The echography and tomography are the diagnostically methods by choice. The percutaneous technics or laboratory studies are not specific, though useful as complementary tests. Aspiration and drainage have relegated surgical drainage to the background as the main form of treatment. Early diagnosis is importnat to instituto timely management to obtain good results.
