Abstract

In 1984, The Nacional Association for Economic Promotion, ANFE, held a seminar during five consecutive Fridays in which fifteen Costa Rican professionals analyzed some of the salient problems in the country's formal education system. Those same problems are re-examined here and compared twenty-three years later to the current ones. In addition, three great issues that were not mentioned in the 1984 seminar are included here: 1.) The necessity to compare Costa Rica’s educational performance with that of developed countries; 2.) The kind of professionals who those in charge of should be deciding what is studied in the country. 3.) The educational authorities as an obstacle to the country's awareness of its low academic performance. Successful results in three programs that introduce educational technologies are also considered.
