José Santos Lombardo
José Santos Lombardo was born in 1775. He held numerous representative positions in politics. In the days of Costa Rica's Independence, he was a supporter of the Iturbide Empire. Then he declared himself a supporter of republicanism. He died in 1831. It is interesting to remember the Political Catechism that he prepared, written in, 1822, in the form of questions and answers. It was used in schools and one wonders how much it could have influenced the Costa Rican vocation for republican life.

Abstract

D. Constantino Láscaris has expressed that it is not easy to find that Catechism the immediate affiliation, but that the remote one is the Aristotelian doctrine of the political regimes, exposed in elementary form. José Santos Lombardo does not propose a political form of the State, but, against the "despotic" government, he faces the "monarchist", and the "republican", the first subject to the arbitrariness of the ruler, while the other two are seen as regimes based on legality, although he points out the possibility of corruption of the monarchical regime in despotic, which, he says, occurs in the Kings of Spain of his time.
