Abstract

United States Jazz pianist and composer. Born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, on October 10, 1917. He moved with his mother and family to New York in 1922. They settled in West Sixties, in a neighborhood called San Juan Hill. Pianist James P. Johnson lived there. Eubie Blake's musical Shuffle Along was performed at a local theater. The streets of San Juan Hill were full of music. The sounds of the singers, the pianists and the great bands escaped from home radios to mix with the gospel of the streets. Monk began playing the piano without formal studies.
