The Soul and its Eschatological Dimension in Greek Religion and Philosophy: From Homer to Plato

Abstract

In the Hebrew tradition God is good and just, while in Greek religion and tragedy, on the contrary, the deities are pleased with human suffering 2 and some of them are expressly charged with punishing mortals. Divinities such as Ate, the one who walks on the heads of men and arouses mental obfuscation, stand out; Nemesis, the goddess of divine vengeance; and the Erinias, those who relentlessly punish the bloodshed. Even the gods embody calamities as nefarious as Hunger and Plague.3 Suffering is an inherent condition of human life, and in the homicical conception, mortal man is the quintessential unhappy being:

"But of all that is stirred and breathing in the earth, there is no more pityless being than man."
