Abstract

On July 25, 1524, the first capital city, called Santiago by Pedro de Alvarado, was founded in Guatemala on the site of the Iximche, capital of the Cakchiqueles. Due to the continuous wars against the indigenous people of that region, the city of Santiago moved to Almolonga on November 22, 1527. The city of Almolonga is located on the slope of the Agua volcano. The life of this old city lasted fourteen years, as it was destroyed by the flood of 1541.
