Abstract

On May 24, 1915, Italy became directly involved in the first world conflict, declaring war on Austria; This intervention has been defined as a continuation of the RISORGIMENTO wars. The War, which concluded victoriously for Italy in November 1918, involved enormous sacrifices, material and moral, on the part of a nation that was still in the process of consolidation. The peace brought bitterness, disappointments and reactions, but above all "it revealed that the internal war was not over." As the only positive consequence, it brought the annexation of some territories in the northeast: Trentino, Alto Adige, Trieste and Istria. Logically, the Great War, during its development, marked a sudden blockage of emigration flows: young men were needed to join the army and a general mobilization of the population. The post-war period saw a sharp, but short-lived, rise in emigration.
