The Vatican and the Free Market

Abstract

An unusual event took place in Rome not long ago. A group of intellectuals in favor of free enterprise met in the Vatican to analyze the crisis of the family and the role of the state in creating this crisis.
Attendees agreed that big government is the cause of problems rather than a solution to them.
In his most recent encyclical on economics, Centesimus Annus, Pope John Paul II highlighted that modern state welfare is costly, bureaucratic, and counterproductive; moreover, he pointed out that many times it replaces the private sector charity, which does a better job. The Pope referred to capitalism as "the most efficient instrument for using resources and responding effectively to needs."
