Abstract

The characteristics of sporadic Italian immigration endured for many decades throughout costa Rica's post-independence era. Italy and Costa Rica, while facing a similar process in the search for their national identity, were immersed in dissimilar problems: the one in a slow process of struggle in order to consolidate as a nation-state, the other already independent and seeking articulation to the world market.
