Abstract

In the general context of Italian immigration in Costa Rica, the massive migration flow (1) of the years 1887 and 1888, for various quantitative and qualitative reasons, stands out in particular. First, the large amount of this immigration stands out, reaching nearly a thousand and a half individuals. Then they highlight other aspects: that the in-migrants were from the same province of northern Italy (or places very close to it), that they had signed a contract to work on the construction of the railway to the Atlantic, that they starred in the famous "Italian strike" and which, in short, laid the groundwork for a consistent Italian community to be formed in the country.
