Abstract

The world music of the mid-19th century is represented in a single figure of great relief: Johannes Brahms, Composer, Pianist and Director, who was born in Germany on May 7, 1833. Brahms's family was very poor and lived in a Crowded tenant house on the Hamburg docks. The father was a mediocre and destitute musician. His wife, slightly deformed, was busy sewing. What they earned together was barely enough to properly feed and clothe their children. Johannes was hungry many times. It didn't take long for him to reveal his talent for music. As a child he invented little melodies, but since he knew nothing about music he devised a kind of notation that allowed him to write them down. The father, who played the double bass, observing the child's interest in music, resolved to encourage and develop it.
