Abstract

The Turrial poet Jorge Delio Bravo Brenes, better known by his pseudonym Jorge Debravo, was born on January 31, 1938, in the town of Guayabo in the village of Santa Cruz. From a very poor peasant family, he had a difficult life, of reluctant struggle for survival, self-improvement and recognition as a vate. His mother, who was his first teacher, taught him to write about banana leaves. As a young man he was passionate about reading and, after his day labors, read at all hours how much it fell into his hands, so the neighbors soon nicknamed him "crazy". But what kind of madman it was, that his life and his work is considered a Costa Rican example, to the point of declaring in 2000 "Benemérito de las Letras Patrias" and his portrait was incorporated into the Benemérito Room of the Legislative Assembly. As ruled in its ruling by the Costa Rican Commission of Honours.
