The representation of autobiographical memory in people with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract

Aim. To study how autobiographical memory is represented in persons with autism spectrum disorder, which role does play semantic and episodic memories in the construction of this representation and what are the main sociocognitive functions that can be attributed to autobiographical memory in these persons. Method. Bibliographical review of theoretical and experimental scientific papers that compare the performance in the construction of a representation of autobiographical memory on subjects with and without autisms spectrum disorder. Conclusions. The study contributes to the knowledge of the different way in which persons with and without autism construct a representation of autobiographical memory, problematizes the predominant role attributed to episodic memory in its construction and relativizes the function autobiographical memory might have in the orientation of these persons through their social world.
