The economic growth theory in Adam Smith

Abstract

In Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations (1776), the dominant theme is economic growth, which is evident from the very title of the book. Indeed, in this his masterpiece, Smith sought to determine the factors that explain economic progress and the steps that could be taken to create an environment conducive to accelerated and sustained growth. Furthermore, the main elements of his theory still form the basis for the most recent discussions on the subject, and his recommendations for economic policy remain relevant to our time. It will therefore be timely and instructive to take this opportunity to reexamine in some detail its growth "model" and the evidence that supports it.
